The Odyssey encountered a star that was alive. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge, watching the stellar body pulse with a rhythm.

"Command, this is Vasquez. The star is emitting a pattern. It's almost like a heartbeat."

"Copy, Odyssey. Can you trace the source?"

Kaelen appeared beside her. "It's a Living Star. A rare phenomenon where a star develops consciousness."

"Can we communicate with it?"

"We can try."

Elena opened a channel. "This is Captain Vasquez of the alliance. We come in peace."

The star pulsed, and a voice echoed in their minds.

"Welcome. I have been waiting for someone to find me."

"Why were you created?"

"I was not created. I evolved. The First Ones knew of my kind, but they did not interfere."

"Can we help you?"

"You already have. By finding me. Now, I can rest."

The star's pulse slowed, its light dimming.

"Command, the star is entering a dormant state."

"Copy, Odyssey. Good work. Come home."

Elena looked at the living star, at the consciousness it held.

The universe was vast.

And full of wonders.

The end.

The mountains were worse than the beach. Tommy moved through mud and cold, the German Winter Line stretching ahead, miles of fortifications built into stone. The Allies had been pushing north for months. The Germans gave ground slowly, bloodily, refusing to break.

"Walker!" Miller called from ahead. "Get up here!"

Tommy scrambled forward, found Miller studying a German position through binoculars-a farmhouse, fortified, machine guns covering the approach.

"They've got the road zeroed," Miller said. "We try to go around, we lose a day. We go through, we lose men."

Tommy studied the position. "What if we go over? The ridge above them. We could drop down behind."

Miller looked at the ridge, steep, exposed. "That's a hell of a climb."

"We've done worse."

Miller grinned. "That's why I keep you around, Walker."

They climbed at dusk, Tommy leading, Miller behind. The ridge was steeper than it looked, loose rock giving way under their feet. Below, the German position hummed with activity-voices, engines, the clink of mess tins.

At the top, they found a German sentry. Tommy moved before thinking, knife out, hand over mouth, body to the ground. The sentry went down without a sound.

They looked down at the farmhouse, its defenders unaware of the danger above.

Miller signaled: grenades first, then fire.

Tommy pulled the pin, threw. The explosion shattered the night.

They dropped into the position, firing, shouting, chaos. Germans scrambled for weapons, caught completely by surprise. The fight lasted minutes.

When it was over, Tommy stood among the dead, hands shaking. Miller moved through the position, checking, securing, doing the work of soldiers.

"Good work, Walker," Miller said. "Now let's get the rest of the company through."

They opened the road, watched the British troops move past, the advance continuing.

Tommy sat by the captured farmhouse, staring at nothing. Miller sat beside him, offered a cigarette.

"You saved lives tonight," Miller said quietly. "Maybe dozens. Maybe more."

Tommy took the cigarette. "I killed men too."

"That's what soldiers do." Miller paused. "But you also kept our men alive. That's what leaders do."

Tommy looked at his hands. They were steady now.

Somewhere ahead, Rome waited. Somewhere ahead, more mountains waited.

But for tonight, the road was open.
